About This Page

This page is for all the little nick knacks that don't deserve thier own page. It's also a dumping ground for still relevant material from pages that have been removed.

Papyrus Font

This site uses the Papyrus Font. If the button to the left doesn’t look like the text next to it then you don’t have the font. Just click the button to download it and follow the instructions. (FYI this is also the font used for the TV shows Serenity, and Medium.)

Get Updated

I used to have Firefox, Explorer, Opera, and Netscape browsers installed so that I could check my html/css against them all, but then I realized that I am not a business. Only businesses should have to go to the trouble of catering to every version of every browser.

This site is designed to work with the safest, most secure, and standards compliant browser: Firefox. It is also designed to scale with screen resolution and/or the Firefox font resize command ( ctrl +/-/0 ).

Just to be fair you can download the latest version of the other browsers here.

And to be thorough here are the two components that every computer should have.

Contact Me

I hate eMail, which is why I hid this, but if you REALLY need to contact me you can do so here.

Forum

I am officially the laziest person ever. I keep meaning to start a forum but I never get around to it. I'm really just putting this here to mock myself into action, but I suspect my capacity for self ridicule is infinite.

The gist is that if just a few people get together and start bouncing ideas off each other, then Fae Tide will gain some momentum. If people start to compete artistically with costumes, displays, and light creations, then the momentum will become overwhelming.

The functions of a forum would replace most of the pages on this website. Namely:

Currently the closest thing to a forum is The Candle Power Forums , which is the only online place (so far) where I bother to make announcements about Fae Tide. It's a pretty cool forum but only a small part is devoted to 'light art' while the rest is devoted to super bright flashlights.

Commercial

I used to have several pages devoted to buying glow stuff until I realized that I’m the only person on earth (literally) that buys glow stuff and then gives it away for free (as opposed to selling it at events). I decided to pare it down a lot and hide it here.

Evaluating Internet Businesses

First off the site should look nice. If it looks like muck it probably it. It’s very easy to have a nice website even if one has no technical skills. The totally inexperienced can use something like this while moderately skilled people can use software like this .

Nothing should seem ‘hinky’. That is the site address should be normal. It should not be a sub-domain, or using a frame. Also there should be a physical address listed on the site (even if it’s just a city with no street). One can check the phone numbers with a reverse directory, as well as check the site name with a whois . The physical address, the phone numbers, and the whois info should all be in the same region.

Any decent site should have the ability to buy smaller quantities (around $50) to sample the merchandise without penalties, and also offer discounts for moderate and bulk purchases. Selection is also important, both for convenience, but also, because having to order from many different companies can rapidly accrue massive shipping charges. And lastly, some companies use shipping as an underhanded way to compete on prices. If you can't fill a cart, and then calculate shipping before you give any payment information then just forget that site altogether. One can compare what shipping should cost here .

Quality and Prices

I saved prices for last because it's a very tricky issue. You never get more than what you pay for but you sure as heck can get a whole lot less. Some internet companies are outrageously overpriced.

The issue of price is closely tied to the 'grade' of the product. For glow items there are roughly three grades:

One way to check relative prices is to compare items that do not have grades like specific toys that have the same batteries and colour. For instance check blue/blue blinkies that use CR927 batteries.

Bracelets are Best

I like bracelets for a variety of reasons. They offer the cheapest price per (bright) glowing unit possible. Also, on almost every site three glow bracelets (24" total) are cheaper than one 22" glow necklace, sometimes a lot cheaper. Bracelets can also be affixed to oneself without the need for lanyards (string/ribbon necklaces) which are a choking hazard. Additionally glow bracelets are remarkably similar to tinker toys, and just a few glow bracelets, glow ball connectors, and bunny ears can be made into literally hundreds of different configurations.
